Self care is a big focus in our society and culture. I often think first of what I want, what would make me happy, what would give me peace. Most people are the same way. But I have noticed that the emphasis on self care has gotten dramatically skewed. People set boundaries where boundaries aren't needed. The Bible says to think more highly of others than yourself but that isn't part of modern self care. God calls us to serve and sacrifice for others. We are even called to serve and love our enemies. Not sure that is possible when self care in our culture is more about self protection.
Jesus did call us to self care though. But not like our natural inclinations or the world would lead us. Jesus would have us focus on virtue. In the sermon on the mount he said not to worry about food and clothing, etc. But focus first on the Kingdom of God. What is the kingdom of God? It is the 7 virtues lived out by God's people on earth: prudence, justice, temperance, courage, faith, hope and charity. The 7 gifts of the Holy Spirit are a perfect self care attributes to pursue: wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord.
The beatitudes reveal to us that self care in our culture is not healthy or a way to happiness.
Blessed are the poor in spirit
Blessed are those who mourn
Blessed are the meek
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness
Blessed are the merciful
Blessed are the pure in heart
Blessed are the peacemakers
Blessed are those who are persecuted for the sake of what is right
This isn't a call to be in an abusive relationship - that wouldn't be standing up for what is right for the abuser. But the vast majority of relationships in our lives aren't abusive. Sure we hurt each other but Jesus' style of self care overcomes through love, mercy, forgiveness, service, sacrifice, doing what is best for the other, thinking the best of the other.
